The following list of mines in Broseley is taken from Ian
Winstanley's Coal
Mining History Resource site. (Some minor spelling corrections have
been made). It shows clearly the small scale of the mining industry in
Broseley from the mid 19th century onwards, with only 82 miners being employed
underground and 26 above ground in 1908
By the mid 19th century coal mining had all but ceased in Broseley with most
mining being for Ironstone and Clay. Ironstone mining came to an end with
the closure of Fosters mines and the one Coalbrookdale mine. Clay mining
(with a little coal) continued until the 1950's. The list below
primarily relate to coal mining and as such may not be exhaustive and could
exclude some mines worked solely for clay and ironstone.
